Curtain Types and Styles: Sizing by Heading

Compare grommet, rod-pocket, tab-top, pinch-pleat, pencil-pleat, wave, cafe, and sheer curtain measurement conventions.

Curtain type changes how width and drop are interpreted. Flat gathered styles are usually compared by total flat width and a fullness ratio; sewn pleats may be ordered by finished coverage; wave and ripple-fold treatments depend on the selected carrier and tape system. Always use the product-specific heading reference.

How to measure

  1. 01

    Measure the usable rod or track span and record decorative finials, returns, bends, or overlaps separately.

  2. 02

    Measure the finished drop from the attachment point named for the selected heading to the intended lower endpoint.

  3. 03

    Convert inches and centimeters only after recording the original measurement; use 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters.

  4. 04

    Compare the calculated target with the exact product label, package quantity, heading take-up, and manufacturer tolerance before ordering.

These are different order conventions. Confirm the heading specification before applying a multiplier.

Grommet, rod-pocket, and tab-top

These ready-made headings display folds in the flat panel. The pole diameter, pocket or tab depth, and manufacturer-stated overall length change how the fabric sits relative to the rod.

Pinch-pleat and pencil-pleat

Pleats consume fabric to create a finished face width. A workroom may ask for finished coverage rather than flat cloth width, so do not apply a fullness multiplier twice.

Wave and ripple-fold systems

Carrier spacing, snap tape, pocket factor, and stack calculation belong to the selected system. Generic fullness is useful for comparison but not a substitute for its chart.

Cafe and sheer treatments

Cafe curtains cover a selected portion of the window; sheers are strongly affected by fabric openness. Neither term supplies a universal length, width, or privacy result.

Before you order or cut

Measure the actual window and selected product. Finished sizes, fullness, header take-up, hardware geometry, and manufacturer tolerances vary. Fabric can shrink, stretch, or behave differently by composition. Measurements do not guarantee fit, privacy, water containment, installation, load capacity, or structural safety. Use the selected product instructions, and have a professional workroom verify expensive custom-fabric orders.
